Annapolis Public Information Officer McGowan Resigns

Phill McGowan, the Public Information Officer for the City of Annapolis has resigned his position effective July 22.  Rhonda Wardlaw will assume his duties. The following press release was just sent by City Hall:

Mayor Joshua J. Cohen announces that Phill McGowan, the Public Information Officer, will leave the City this month to pursue a job with the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. His effective leave date will be Friday, July 22.

Rhonda Wardlaw, the Digital Media and Marketing Coordinator, will assume the PIO duties on an acting basis.

Mr. McGowan came on as an initial member of the Mayor’s administration in December 2009 and has directed the City’s communications efforts, including the web, TV and social media platforms. He worked for a decade as a reporter, editor and social media specialist for The Baltimore Sun and briefly as editor at Virilion, a Washington-based interactive public relations firm, before coming to work for the City of Annapolis.

Mr. McGowan will serve as Communications Chief for the Office of the Clerk, the nonpartisan record keeper and historian of the House.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for Phill and while I am thrilled for him, I will miss working with him both professionally and personally,” Mayor Cohen said. “Since Day One of this administration, Phill has been much more than a public information officer. He has been a trusted member of my core management team. As we have responded to one crisis after another, his astute perspective and instincts have shaped our decision-making numerous times.

“Phill’s work ethic is second to none. He is genuinely committed to his craft of making information more transparent and accessible. The City’s loss is Washington’s gain, and I wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

“I can’t thank the Mayor enough for the chance to serve in his administration and represent the City,” Mr. McGowan said. “I have worked with a great team of people across all departments who are absolutely committed to serving the residents, businesses and visitors of Annapolis. Under the Mayor’s leadership, the City has made tremendous strides to make vital information about the City government more accessible to the public.”
