Synopsis:

On June 10, 2011 at approximately 2308 hours, several plain clothes detectives observed a traffic violation and conducted a traffic stop utilizing an unmarked Dodge Durango. All occupants of the Durango exited the vehicle to perform their assigned duties once the Durango was parked behind the violator’s vehicle; the Durango was partially on the shoulder of the roadway and had all of its emergency lights activated. During the stop, all occupants of the violator’s vehicle were asked to exit their vehicle for furtherance of the officers’ legal duties.

The initial investigation indicates that during the traffic stop, a 1989 GMC pickup truck being driven by Steven James Parsons failed to comply with the “Move Over Law” and struck the rear of the police vehicle. This caused the police vehicle to be pushed forward several feet and strike a pedestrian was standing between the two vehicles. A Police Detective Sergeant , Sergeant Clark, was also injured when he heard the collision and dove into the violator’s vehicle to try and avoid being struck by the vehicle.

Pedestrian #1 was transported by ambulance to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center where he was listed in critical but stable condition. Pedestrian #2 and the operator of Vehicle #1 were transported by ambulances to Baltimore Washington Medical Center with minor, non-life threatening injuries. It is uncertain at this time if drugs/or alcohol contributed to this collision. The investigation is continuing.
