A cultural evening of music, dance and art from the Middle Eastern country of Oman will be presented July 15 at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, 801 Chase St., Annapolis.
The Al-Najoom Dancers and Musicians will present traditional folk music and dancing for all ages. The troupe comes from the Wahiba Sands desert area of Oman. The dance and music troupe is an association of family and friends who have been performing together for over 15 years primarily for audiences in Tunisia, India, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon and other Middle Eastern countries. They first performed in the United States last year at the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market and were invited to return to the United States this year.
Their program will include traditional folk songs played on original instruments that include drums, bagpipes, a type of tambourine, and wind instruments made from animal horns. The dances represent the cultural and working life of the Omani people.
An Omani embroiderer and weaver will demonstrate their crafts and renowned scholar of Omani art, Neil Richardson, will explain the Omani Arts beginning at 5:30 P.M.
The program is free. It is co-sponsored by the World Artists Experiences, an organization bridging international understanding through cultural and citizen diplomacy and the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center in partnership with Maryland Hall.
