Aeros Sweep Away Baysox

The Akron Aeros completed a three-game sweep of the Baysox with a 4-1 victory Wednesday afternoon. The Baysox have lost six of their last seven and have fallen to 37-39 on the season.

After setting a season-high with 15 hits in Monday’s loss, the Baysox offense faltered in the final two games of the series. Wednesday, Bowie hitters managed just four hits and scored one run. It is the second time the Baysox have been swept on the road this season as they also lost five in Harrisburg May 27-30.

Akron got off to a fast start against right-handed pitcher Zach Clark. Jordan Henry hit a lead off single to centerfield and moved to third when Ben Copeland singled to right field. Both runners scored when Juan Diaz doubled to center field to make the score 2-0.

The Baysox got one run back in the top of the fourth inning against Akron starter T.J. McFarland. Second baseman Greg Miclat drew a lead off walk and with designated hitter LJ Hoes batting, stole second base. Hoes reached on a fielder’s choice that was fielded by the pitcher, but Miclat also beat the throw and arrived safely at third. With one out and catcher Caleb Joseph batting, Miclat scored on a passed ball by catcher Raul Padron to bring the Baysox within one run.

The Aeros extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Copeland singled on a ground ball to center field and Diaz then drew a walk. Copeland advanced to third on the play after a missed catch error by shortstop Pedro Florimon. Beau Mills drove in both runners with a double to right field to put the Aeros up 4-1.

Clark pitched five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits though he walked a season-high four batters while striking out three in a loss. Right-handed reliever Pat Egan, who was making his first appearance of the season with the Baysox, pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Clark and struck out three batters. Left-handed reliever Pedro Viola pitched a perfect eighth inning for the Baysox.

Miclat stole two bases in the game, giving him sole possession of the team stolen bases lead with 23 this season. Miclat has yet to be caught stealing as he is a perfect 23-for-23. Through 76 games, Miclat has now stolen more bases than team-leader Jonathan Tucker stole in all of 2010 (22). Catching for the Aeros was Raul Padron, who was playing in his first game with Akron this season. The Baysox were three-for-three on stolen base attempts in the game.

Thursday, RHP Chorye Spoone (1-4, 4.66) takes the mound for the Baysox as they travel to Binghamton to take on the Mets. His opponent will be RHP Tobi Stoner (3-2, 5.29)

The Baysox began a seven-game road trip Monday, June 27 and return home Monday, July 4 for a four game home stand that features their Independence Day Celebration with an extended fireworks extravaganza Monday, Tailgate Tuesday and Free Food Tuesday night, Veteran’s Appreciation Night Wednesday and the Mystery Bobblehead Giveaway and Festivus Miracle Thursday night.
