Simon, Baysox Shut-Out Richmond

The Baysox scored the only two runs of the game in the first inning as they recorded their third shut-out of the season to top the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-0 Tuesday night. With the win, the Baysox improve to 19-19 on the season.

Right-handed starting pitcher Alfredo Simon had his best start of the season for the Baysox as he threw six shutout innings in just his third start as part of a Major League Rehab Assignment. Simon allowed just three hits and struck out four batters while shutting down the Flying Squirrels early.

The Baysox got off to a fast start scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Facing Richmond starter Clayton Tanner, center fielder Xavier Avery struck out to start the game. Second baseman Greg Miclat then singled on a line drive to second base and moved to third on a double by catcher Caleb Joseph. Third baseman Brandon Waring popped out for the second out of the inning, but the Baysox then came through with a clutch hit, something they have been struggling to find in the past few games. First baseman Robbie Widlansky hit a two-RBI single on a line drive to center field to give the Baysox an early lead.

The Flying Squirrels best chance to score came in the bottom of the second inning after Juan Perez reached first with two outs after a fielding error by Waring. Simon then walked the bases loaded before striking out Mike McBryde to end the inning.

For the remainder of the game, the Flying Squirrels did not have a runner advance past second base and the Baysox pitchers dominated. Richmond did not record a single extra base hit the entire game.

The Baysox offense also slowed down after a strong first inning, recording just four hits in the final eight innings of the game. Right fielder Ronnie Welty and shortstop Pedro Florimon accounted for all four of the Baysox hits that came after the first inning.

Right-handed relief pitcher Dan Klein replaced Simon in the seventh inning and threw two scoreless innings. In five appearances with the Baysox, Klein has yet to allow an earned run. Right-handed closer Jose Diaz entered in the ninth inning and recorded his 12th save of the season to protect the Baysox 2-0 lead.

Facing the Baysox for the third time this season, Tanner struggled in the first inning when he gave up two runs, but got into a rhythm starting in the second inning. Tanner gave up two earned runs on six hits in six innings of work while striking out six batters after allowing three unearned runs in his last start against the Baysox.

Tomorrow, RHP Zach Clark (4-1, 3.05) will take the mound for the Baysox. Pitching for the Flying Squirrels will be (1-0, 3.03).

The team began a three-day road trip starting May 17 after an off day Monday, May 16, and returns home Friday, May 20 for a three-game home stand. For more information on Baysox promotions and theme nights, visit www.baysox.com.
