Synopsis:

On May 4, 2011, at approximately 7:41 a.m., members of the Traffic Safety Section were requested to respond to the area of Furnace Avenue and Sunny Brook Drive to assist with a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the pedestrian, a crossing guard, had entered the crosswalk to assist a student cross the roadway. A 2000 Thomas school bus was traveling northbound on Sunny Brook Drive and stopped for the stop sign at Sunny Brook Drive and Furnace Avenue. Evidence indicates that the crossing guard was in the crosswalk on Furnace Avenue, approximately in the middle of the crosswalk, when the bus made a left hand turn and struck the crossing guard.

As a result of the crash, the victim sustained serious injuries and was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma, where she is currently in serious, but stable condition. Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in this crash. The preliminary cause of the crash is believed to be failure to yield to the crossing guard on the part of the bus driver. The crash remains under investigation by the Traffic Safety Section. Charges are pending a consultation with the State’s Attorney’s Office.
