Girl’s Murderer Stabbed In Prison.  A registered sex offender serving life sentences for kidnapping, sexually assaulting and killing an 11-year-old Eastern Shore girl was stabbed several times Sunday, corrections officials said. Maryland Department Public Safety and Correctional Services spokesman Mark Vernarelli told WBAL-TV 11 News that Thomas Leggs Jr. was stabbed at a western Maryland prison during lunch time.Leggs was treated inside the prison and is expected to survive.Authorities did not immediately identify any suspects, and an investigation continues.

Gary Williams On Retirement: ‘It’s The Right Time”. Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams announced his retirement Thursday, saying “it’s the right time” for him to end a career in which he led his alma mater to the 2002 national championship. Williams coached for 33 years, the last 22 at Maryland, where he played as a guard from 1964-67.

Gates To Speak At Naval Academy Graduation. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is scheduled to speak this month at the U.S. Naval Academy’s graduation, an academy spokesman said Thursday. The graduation and commissioning ceremony for the class of 2011 is set for May 27 at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis.Gates, 67, was sworn in as defense secretary in December 2006. By the time he leaves the position June 30, Gates will be the fourth-longest serving Pentagon chief in history.

Anne Arundel To Install Call Box At Linthicum Light Rail Station. A call box will be installed at a light rail station in Anne Arundel County in an effort to expedite police response to area.The announcement Thursday follows a push by residents in Linthicum who want to shut down the light rail stop there, citing growing crime concerns.County Executive John Leopold’s office released a statement Thursday indicating that the county has purchased a call box to be installed at the station that will connect users to Maryland Transit Administration police and county police.
