Community Health Report Shows County Progress With Cancer Screening

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health recently released its fourteenth annual Report Card of Community Health Indicators. The publication, which can be viewed on the Department website, www.aahealth.org, reviews County health statistics related to cancer, communicable diseases, infant health and other selected health topics.

The Report Card highlights progress made in lowering death rates for stroke, diabetes and female breast cancer. The 2011 report shows that County residents have met nationally set goals for getting screened for cholesterol levels, breast cancer and colorectal cancer.

According to the Report Card, rates of lung/bronchus cancer and melanoma mortality are higher in Anne Arundel County than in Maryland as a whole. The Report Card notes the good news that more County adults are indicating they have never smoked. Smoking is the leading risk factor for lung cancer and it increases the risk of asthma, heart disease and other health problems.

Issues noted in the Report Card include adult overweight and obesity, sexually transmitted diseases and health care coverage.  For more information about the Report Card, go to www.aahealth.org or call 410-222-7202.
