Anne Arundel Medical Center To Host National Cancer Survivors Day

Anne Arundel Medical Center’s (AAMC) DeCesaris Cancer Institute is hosting an event to commemorate National Cancer Survivors Day on Sunday, June 5, 2011, celebrating the lives of those affected by cancer.  Cancer survivors, caregivers, family members, friends and healthcare professionals will unite to show that life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful and productive.  This annual, worldwide celebration of life will be held in hundreds of communities throughout the United States, Canada, and other participating countries. AAMC is hosting the event for a second year in a row.

“Over 11 million Americans are now living with and beyond a diagnosis of cancer. In the United States, almost half of all men and one third of all women are expected to be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives,” said Dr. Barry Meisenberg, medical director of the AAMC DeCesaris Cancer Institute. “Major advances in cancer prevention, early detection and treatment have resulted in longer survival, and therefore, a growing number of cancer survivors.”

“National Cancer Survivors Day is not only a day of celebration but it gives us all an opportunity to come together and support one another- which is crucial when overcoming a disease as profound as cancer,” said Cathy Brady-Copertino, executive director of the AAMC DeCesaris Cancer Institute.

A “survivor” is anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life.  On June 5, survivors are encouraged to bring their family and supporters to the event where they can connect with others while enjoying a variety of speakers, workshops and refreshments.   The talks will be on wellness topics such as nutrition, complimentary and alternative medicine, sexuality, exercise and stress management.  Visitors can also attend workshops to learn about the benefits of journaling, organic gardening, yoga and Tai Chi.  In addition, all will have the option of participating in massage and reiki sessions, all at no charge.

Cancer survivor and acclaimed motivational speaker Conor Cunneen will impart inspirational advice to the crowd with fun and humor.  The talk will round out a joyous day of celebration, featuring survivors, physicians and care team members, and recognition of community members who have done an especially remarkable job of advancing the cause of survivorship.

According to the Maryland State Council on Cancer Control, as of 2009, there were more than 290,000 Marylanders who were cancer survivors, comprising more than 20 percent of the population 65 years and older.  Typically, cancer survivors are reported to have very stable mental health and are more active in the maintenance of their health after the diagnosis of cancer.  They are enlightened advocates not only for themselves but also for those who will come after them.

This celebration is a wonderful opportunity to pause for a moment and honor all cancer survivors who have survived the challenges of treatment and who are now celebrating their life in full bloom.  Held from 1:00-4:00PM on June 5, 2011 in AAMC’s Doordan Institute, 7th floor, Health Sciences Pavillion, 2000 Medical Parkway, Annapolis, this event is free and open to all cancer survivors and their supporters.   Please R.S.V.P.  online at www.aahs.org/ncsd or by calling 443-481-4710.  For more information, visit http://www.aahs.org/cancer/.
