Weitzman Harnesses Social Media To Help Tornado Victims

After a tornado touched down in Joplin, Missouri on Sunday, May 22nd (the latest in a devastating series of tornadoes to hit the South accounting for more than 400 deaths), the Annapolis based Weitzman Agency decided to get their social community involved.

Using the power of Facebook and virtual word-of-mouth, Weitzman pledged to donate $3 to the American Red Cross for every new “Like” the Weitzman Agency Facebook page received over the course of two days. The results of the promotion, created as an effort to help those in the Midwest, not only met but exceeded their expectations.

Weitzman President, Margriet Mitchell, said, “It is remarkable. Every time I hit the ‘refresh’ button, more likes were appearing.”

As of 12:00 PM today, the Weitzman Agency Facebook page had over 1,300 total “Likes.” Most importantly, the number of “Likes” that were gained over the two-day period triggered a donation of $1,500 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Efforts.

Though the campaign has ended, Weitzman continues to encourage their online community to donate directly to the American Red Cross.

“The power of social media, as we have witnessed over the past few days, is incredible and the outpouring of support from the community has been nothing less than extraordinary,” said Mitchell.
