The Blue Angels abruptly canceled their upcoming practice and flight demonstration earlier this afternoon. While at the Herndon Climb, we were given a brief statement.

The Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, The Blue Angels, have canceled the practice demonstration and air show scheduled for May 24 and 25 at the United States Naval Academy (USNA).

This cancellation is due to a safety stand down period imposed by the team’s commanding officer after a lower-than-normal maneuver that took place during the team’s last performance at Lynchburg Regional Air Show, May 22 in Lynchburg, VA. Following this low maneuver all aircraft landed safely without damage or injury to personnel.

During the training stand-down the team will remain in Pensacola for additional training and air show demonstration practice. It has yet to be determined if the Blue Angels will perform the flyover at the USNA graduation May 27, 2011.

The Blue Angels regret any inconvenience and look forward to continuing to represent the Navy and Marine Corps.

Eye On Annapolis broke the news about the future of the Blue Angels in Annapolis last year. It has been confirmed that the show will NOT take place in 2012. The involved entities are working to bring it back in 2013 and later. At issue was the former Superintendent’s decision to move graduation to after the Memorial Day holiday. Local authorities including the US Coast Guard, Department of Natural Resources, and State Highway Administration all expressed concern for handling the show combined with elevated vehicular and boat traffic.

Please check back with Eye On Annapolis as to the flyover at Graduation. Additionally, we will have photos and video up of this morning’s Color Parade and this afternoon’s Herndon Climb.

The Herndon Climb was completes in approximately 2 hours 45 minutes and there was one female midshipman who was injured and transported to the hospital as a precaution.
