An Evening Of Comedy And World-Class A Capella Harmony

The Sons of the Severn, the Annapolis area’s premiere men’s show chorus, will present their annual spring show on May 7th at South River High School in Edgewater. Called “Reunion Rivalry: A Musical Comedy of . . . Eras,” the show will offer what fans have come to expect of the chorus—a combination of great four-part harmony and zany comedy. And this year’s special treat: the remarkably smooth a cappella sound of Maxx Factor, the world’s best Sweet Adelines quartet (2011 international champions) and finalists in the 2010 season of NBC’s “The Sing-Off.” Also in the singing lineup is Lustre, one of the star quartets of the Sweet Adelines mid-Atlantic region, as well as three quartets from the Sons of the Severn and two of the high school’s a cappella groups, the Trouble Clefs and the Sea Sharps.

“The first half of the show will incorporate the tried-and-true combination that has made our shows so popular with our fans—an improbable storyline, zany comedy, and lots of ringing barbershop harmony,” says Sons of the Severn president David Bankard. “The second half of the show continues another of the chorus’s traditions—bringing world-class vocal ensembles to Annapolis-area audiences, at a very affordable price.”

“This isn’t your grandfather’s barbershop concert,” says Gene Valendo, who wrote the show and sings baritone in the chorus. “It’s a musical revue, complete with a storyline, script, props, and actors. The plot centers on a high-school glee club’s annual reunion. It all starts out innocently enough. But egos, inter-generational miscommunications, and the Machiavellian maneuverings of a bored news reporter bring about a few unexpected turns.”

The show begins at 7 p.m. and will be held in the high school’s main auditorium. South River High School is at 201 Central Avenue East, Edgewater, Md. Admission price is $15 for adults, and $10 for seniors, students, and military personnel. Ages 12 and under admitted free. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the high school’s music department. Tickets may be purchased online at www.singannapolis.com, by calling (410) 674-7165, or at the door. Advance-purchase tickets will be held for pickup at will-call on the night of the show.
