Police Release Photos Of Mall Heist Suspect

CORRECTION 09:43 am, March 10, 2011: We assumed that this was indeed the robbery on March 7 by two armed men. Apparently on Saturday, March 5, 2011, the same store was robbed.  We regret the error and have made significant corrections to this article.

Anne Arundel County Police have released surveillance photos of a possible suspect in the March 7, 2011 a March 5th armed robbery of theft at the Liljenquist & Beckstead Jewelers at Westfield Annapolis.  Anyone with any information is urged to contact the Southern District at 410-222-1960.

[New Information] On March 5, 2011, at approximately 7:30 p.m., officers from the Southern District responded to the Liljenquist & Beckstead jewelry store located within the Annapolis Mall for a report of a theft.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with employees, who indicated that a male suspect entered the store, requested to see some jewelry and then fled the store after the jewelry was handed to him. Please see the attached surveillance photos of the suspect as he entered the Annapolis Mall.

Anyone with information on the identity of the suspect is asked to contact the Southern District at 410-222-1960.

However, there is a significant discrepancy to the initial reports from witnesses.  The initial report was that two men robbed the store. The police report issued on March 8, 2011 also indicated two suspects were being sought and described them as

  • Suspect #1: Black male in his mid 20’s, approximately 5’10” with a thin build, dark complexion, wearing a dark-colored New York Yankees baseball cap, a black nylon parka and a dark-colored backpack
  • Suspect #2: Black male in his mid 20’s with a thin build, wearing a dark, green jacket, a dark- colored New York Yankees baseball cap and a dark-colored backpack

This latest report now indicates that it is one suspect with a completely different description:

[New Information] The suspect in this robbery is identified as follows:

Suspect: Black male, approximately 30 years old, 5’11”, 250 pounds, with a round face and dark complexion, a tribal style symbol tattooed on the back of his right wrist that extends upwards into his sleeve, last seen wearing a navy blue “Polo” sweater, navy blue slacks and a navy blue driving cap with a bill when he committed the theft.

While age can be deceiving, the difference between a “thin build” and “250 pounds” is significant. The initial suspects were both reported to be wearing New York Yankees baseball caps, this one is wearing an unbranded driving cap. The initial suspects were wearing parkas and jackets, this one is wearing a sweater. The initial suspects were wearing backpacks, no backpack is evident in the photo.

The same store was robbed by two armed men on Monday, March 7, 2011 and police have not yet released any surveillance video or issued any further statement.
