PEACE Legislative Forum This Friday

The Protect Elders Against Crime and Exploitation (PEACE) Coalition will host a Legislative Forum in the Maryland Senate Building Conference Room on March 4, 2010 at 11 a.m. This event will be held at 11 Bladen Street in Annapolis, MD and is an opportunity for constituents, professionals and legislators to stand united against elder abuse in our communities.

This Legislative Forum will provide a venue to thank the Maryland General Assembly for working to fight elder abuse and will also address the need to increase awareness regarding the abuse and exploitation of vulnerable adults.

An estimated 1 to 2 million Americans over the age of 65 are abused each year, according to the House Select Committee on Aging. Yet only one in fourteen incidents, excluding self-neglect, ever comes to the attention of the authorities.

According to the State Long Term Care Ombudsmen Program, physical abuse is the most common form of elder abuse in residential settings, yet only 27% of emergency rooms have written procedures for addressing elder abuse, compared to 75% which have child abuse procedures. This lack of victim services on the most basic of levels reflects our community’s overall lack of awareness regarding the issue.

PEACE represents over 50 professionals from diverse fields–all working to increase public awareness of elder abuse in our counties, educate professionals who come into contact with seniors and advocate for policies to protect Maryland seniors.

Please join our members, including faith-based leaders, law enforcement/TRIAD officers, non-profit directors, elder law attorneys, State’s Attorneys, aging network representatives and more from Anne Arundel, Calvert and Prince George’s Counties.

Please RSVP to Kate Lang at [email protected] or contact Merry O’Brien, Director of Special Grants for Maryland Crime Victims’ Resource Center, Inc. and Coalition Chair for PEACE, at 301-952-0063.
