Leopold Moves To Protect 600 Acres In South County

County Executive John R. Leopold is moving forward on his plan to preserve more than 600 acres of rural land on Rockhold Creek in South County and plant thousands of trees.

“Keeping South County rural is more than just a slogan. It’s our guiding principle in development and land preservation,” County Executive Leopold said. “Next week we will start planting 12,000 trees on our Rockhold Creek Farm property, and shortly thereafter we hope to close on the 200-acre property next door.”

The Anne Arundel County Council approved the purchase of development rights on a 206-acre woodland property in the Deale/West River area of South County yesterday. The Thompson property is located along Nutwell Sudley Road.  The County will next move to close on the property.

Twelve development rights will be extinguished through this easement purchase providing further environmental protection to Rockhold Creek and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay. Forest Management Plans prepared by a Forester registered in Maryland are in place. The south east portion of this tract lies at the headwaters of Rockhold Creek and is contiguous to 400 acres of County owned land known as Rockhold Creek Farm. The Deed of Easement restrictions are perpetual and run with the land.

Anne Arundel County has preserved and protected nearly 12,000 acres of agricultural land and woodland through various easement programs including the Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation Program and the Rural Legacy Program administered through the Maryland Department of Agriculture and Planning and the Department of Natural Resources respectively.

Landowners interested in protecting their farmland and woodland for future generations should contact the Department of Recreation and Parks at (410) 222-7317 to explore the various options available.
