County To Replace Deale Pumper Engine

County Executive Leopold today announced that the County will replace the damaged engine in a Deale Volunteer Fire Department pumper truck with a fully-functioning engine from a salvaged truck.

“I am pleased that we have achieved a solution that is economical and also in the best interest of public safety,” County Executive Leopold said. “A new truck for the Deale Volunteer Fire Department would have cost $435,000, and a re-built engine would have cost $39,000. With the availability of an identical engine from a salvaged vehicle, we can extend the life of this equipment and also get the engine back into service by summertime.”

The County recently settled an insurance claim with the Riviera Beach Fire Department, and that truck has an identical 8-cylinder Detroit Diesel engine.  The estimated cost of the work required is $12,000, and the estimated time to complete the work is less than two months.

“The Deale Volunteer Fire Department is very pleased that County Executive Leopold was able to help facilitate the repair of our fire engine,” said Gayle Moreland, President of the Deale Volunteer Fire Department.  “Service to the citizens of Anne Arundel County is always our priority, and the repair of our engine will place this apparatus back into service to respond to calls.  We would also like to express our appreciation to Councilman Jerry Walker and state senators Mike Miller and Ed Reilly, who worked with us to resolve this issue.”
