Meeting On Meade School Redistricting

The county Board of Education has scheduled a public briefing and a public hearing on Superintendent Kevin M. Maxwell’s recommendation to redistrict elementary schools on Fort George G. Meade to best utilize additional capacity being created by construction of the new Pershing Hill Elementary School and to alleviate, to the extent possible, the overcrowding at other elementary schools.

Dr. Maxwell’s recommendation is identical to that arrived at by a panel made up of parents, community residents, and school system officials. That plan would turn the current West Meade Elementary School building into an early education center that would serve all Early Childhood Intervention, prekindergarten, and kindergarten students now assigned to West Meade, Manor View, and Pershing Hill elementary
schools, as well as those living within the boundaries of those three schools. The new Pershing Hill Elementary School, which will open in August, and Manor View Elementary School would serve students in
grades 1 through 5.

A briefing on the plan will be held at 7:00 p.m. on February 15, 2011, at Meade Heights Elementary School, located at 1925 Reece Road. The briefing provides a time for the public to learn about details of the plan, ask questions, and seek clarification. No public testimony is taken at the briefing.

Testimony will be taken at the public hearing, scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 7, at Meade High School, located at 1100 Clark Road. Those wishing to speak can sign up beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The Board must adopt a redistricting plan by April 30, 2011, for it to take effect in August 2011. More information about the redistricting process can be found at www.aacps.org in the “For Your Information” section.
