Dr. Maxwell Throws Out A Challenge

County schools Superintendent Kevin M. Maxwell has challenged schools across the county to raise the bar this year and better 2010’s record level of donations to the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life campaign.

In letters sent home with students last week, Dr. Maxwell set a goal for every school to have at least one team with students and/or staff participate. A year ago, teams from county schools played a major role in helping to raise more than $628,000 for the four events, about $66,000 more than the year before.

“Cancer has touched the lives of every single resident of our county in some way,” said Dr. Maxwell, who will be the campaign’s honorary chairman for the second straight year. “Our schools are vital parts of our community, and events such as this provide phenomenal opportunities to instill in our children the values of caring and volunteerism that will help make our county a better place for all of us to live. Relay For Life is an emotional and inspirational outpouring of love and hope, and we as a school system are proud to play a role in helping to eradicate this terrible disease.”

Relay For Life is an overnight event that remembers those who have lost their battle with cancer, celebrates the lives of those who have fought and are fighting the disease, and raises funds for research and programs.

Participants walk laps in teams or individually and take part in a variety of events throughout the evening and morning hours.

There are four Relay For Life events scheduled in Anne Arundel County. They are:
