Anne Arundel Police Searching For Known Sex Offenders. Anne Arundel County police need help tracking down several convicted sex offenders. The compliance unit of the sex offender division has issued arrest warrants for James Butler, Roger Zerne, Thomas Long Jr., Thomas Tinsley and Abimbola Bankole.

MD Police Find More Illegal Rockfish Nets. Maryland Natural Resources police said they’ve found more illegal rockfish nets in the Chesapeake Bay. Natural Resources Police said officers recovered another 1,500 yards of illegal fishing net containing 300 pounds of striped bass Wednesday night near Kent Island. The seizure marks the eighth in three weeks. Natural Resources Police said 12.6 tons of poached striped bass, also known as rockfish, have been recovered.

MD Senate Panel Approves Gay Marriage Bill. A panel of Maryland senators voted in favor of same-sex marriage legislation Thursday, setting the stage for a final Senate vote soon. The Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee voted 7-4 Thursday, in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage in Maryland, and added a clause designed to protect religious groups from having to perform gay marriage ceremonies or provide services for the weddings.The bill would repeal a 38-year-old provision in Maryland law that defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman, giving same-sex couples the same legal rights as heterosexuals.

Animal Supporters Seek Tougher Cruelty Penalties. Animal rights supporters want tougher penalties for people who abuse animals in Maryland. House lawmakers listened Thursday as supporters made their case for the bill that would increase the penalties for animal cruelty from 90 days in jail to six months.The bill would also increase the fine from $1,000 to $2,500. The bill was filed in response to three high-profile animal cruelty cases: the shooting death last year of a Siberian Husky named Bear Bear in an Anne Arundel County dog park, the 2009 death of a Baltimore pit bull named Phoenix who was set on fire, and the recent case of a cat named Mittens, who survived being doused with lighter fluid and set on fire in Baltimore.
