Annapolis Maritime Museum

The Museum needs volunteers to expand its innovative environmental education program, conduct tours to the historic Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, restore wooden boats, interpret the Museum’s exhibits to the public, and help with the winter seminar series, the summer concert series, and events like the Annapolis Oyster Roast in March and the Boatyard Beach Bash in September.   • 6 – 8 pm, Tues. Feb. 1, 2011, Volunteer Open House: The Museum invites all current and prospective volunteers to gather for a celebration of this past year’s achievements and a preview of the year ahead at the Volunteer Open House. This past year, more than 200 volunteers donated more than 4,000 hours of service to the community. Volunteers will learn more about upcoming opportunities to have fun while serving the community. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

This nonprofit is dedicated to finding a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Volunteers from Anne Arundel County are especially needed to serve on the JDRF Maryland Chapter Board of Directors. Office volunteers, 14 years and older are needed in the Towson office. Light House Shelter

This emergency shelter facility provides shelter for single men and women and families and runs a transitional housing program in Annapolis. Volunteers, 18 and over, are needed for a variety of duties associated with the food program, children’s programs, facilities cleaning & maintenance, office and administration, adult education programs, and the overnight homeless (Winter Relief) program. Pro bono professional volunteers are also needed serve the shelter and its clients with specialized skills such as accounting, medicine, law, and carpentry. The hours are flexible for many tasks and training is provided. In addition to volunteers, the shelter has an immediate need for pantry food items because of a greatly increased demand for lunches. Maryland Federation of Art

Through exhibitions and organizational activities, the Maryland Federation of Art provides opportunities to encourage and support artists in their work and to promote awareness of the visual arts in the community at large. Volunteering at the MFA is a great way to network with peers and creative types, learn new skills and use old ones, and meet new friends. Maryland State Police 15th Annual Polar Bear Plunge-Sat., Jan. 29, 2011

This annual fundraiser at Sandy Point, Annapolis, supports Maryland Special Olympics athletes. Volunteers are needed between the hours of 7:00 am–5:00 pm for: Registration/customer service; Food & beverage distribution; Plunger crowd control; and for a wide variety of other positions. There are opportunities for everyone. You, your family members, friends and co-workers, (minimum age is 16 years old for individuals– chaperoned volunteer groups 12 years old and older) are needed to volunteer for this very rewarding and exciting event. All registered volunteers will receive an event item and lunch. Volunteers are also needed for the “Super Sunday Sweep” from 11am–4pm, Jan. 30, 2011, at Sandy Point State Park to help return the Park to its natural condition by removing items left behind by Plungers. The Super Sunday Sweep is a great individual or group activity! Ordnance Road Correctional Center

Volunteers, 21 years old + who pass a background check, are needed as adult literacy tutors, to assist in the library, with the sewing program, as a newsletter editor, and as a photographer for special programs/events. Volunteers are also needed to assist with recreational and sports activities, to teach CPR, to work with families to bring them together, and to lead substance abuse meetings.  On a quarterly basis, volunteers are needed for the “Read to Me” project, helping to audio-tape the reading of storybooks to inmate’s children. Providence Center

Providence Center is a nonprofit that provides employment, vocational training, recreational, retirement, medical day care, and transportation services to developmentally disabled adults.  There are immediate openings for volunteers, including mature high school students, in: 1) Arnold as Pottery & Horticultural Assistants, Activity Center & Baldwin Industries Woodworking Aides, and Friendly Visitors; 2) Millersville as Activity Center & Arts Class Aides, Crafts, Woodshop, & Pottery Assistants; and 3) Pasadena as Senior Program Assistant. Reginald Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture

The museum is dedicated to serving the community by providing multifaceted support through meaningful interactions with history and material culture of Maryland African Americans. Volunteers, age 16 and older, are needed to assist at the Information Desk, as Docents, for Special Events, and more. There are ongoing opportunities on Saturdays and Sundays for assistance with greeting guests and patrons at the main entrance and to work with kid’s activities during public hours.  Volunteer orientations are held at 7:00 pm on the last Monday of each month. Rob’s Barber Shop Community Foundation

This nonprofit features projects that provide no-charge grooming services for individuals who cannot afford to attend the barber or beauty salon. Volunteers, minimum age 16 are needed for administrative tasks. Volunteer barbers and hairstylist are also needed to serve homeless and other needy persons in Odenton and surrounding areas. United Cerebral Palsy of Southern Maryland

UCP of Southern Maryland provides services and opportunities to children and adults with disabilities in Anne Arundel, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties. Volunteers are needed for a variety of positions including; placing and picking up donation canisters, special event assistance, office assistant, board of directors & committee members, companionship, assisting with recreational/crafts activities, handyman, gardening/yard work, and more.
