From the Anne Arundel County Police Department:

On January 18, 2011, at approximately 9:09 p.m., officers from Southern responded to an address in the 3600 block of Solomons Island Road in Harwood for a report of family violence.

Upon arrival, officers learned that an adult male subject assaulted a family member and fled the scene prior to the arrival of officers. As a result, officers conducted periodic checks on the residence and responded out again on January 19, 2011, at approximately 6:46 a.m. As officers arrived, the male subject fled the residence, entered a Ford F-150 pick-up truck and struck an unoccupied patrol vehicle at a certain point. The suspect then passed both patrol vehicles, but proceeded to turn his vehicle around and strike the second vehicle, which was occupied by one officer with the second officer standing outside of the vehicle. The patrol vehicles were both disabled as a result of the incident and the officers were transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center for treatment.

The suspect then continued onto Route 2 South, where he initially passed a third patrol vehicle, which was stationary at the intersection of Route 2 and Harwood Road. The suspect vehicle returned and struck that patrol vehicle twice, forcing it into oncoming traffic. A fourth officer, who was responding to the scene, eventually made contact with the suspect vehicle and that patrol vehicle sustained damage as a result. A citizen vehicle was also involved in the crash, but no injuries were reported. The officer whose vehicle was struck and forced into oncoming traffic was also transported to AAMC for treatment.

The suspect vehicle continued to a residence in the 4500 block of South Polling House Road, where the suspect was apprehended at approximately 6:57 a. m. All three officers, a nine-year veteran assigned to the Patrol Services Bureau’s Southern District, an 18-year veteran assigned to the Patrol Service Bureau’s Southern District and a 19-year veteran assigned to the Special Services Bureau’s Traffic Safety Section, have since been treated and released from the hospital. After consultation with the State’s Attorney’s Office, detectives applied for and obtained an arrest warrant charging the suspect, William Richard Leapley, Jr., 27, of 3658 Solomons Island Road in Harwood, Maryland, with the following charges: Attempted Murder, Attempted Manslaughter by Motor Vehicle, 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer and Reckless Endangerment (four counts of each charge) and related traffic offenses.
