This Week In Volunteering

Calvary Food Bank

Calvary Food Bank is certified by Anne Arundel County Food Link to provide free food to area residents; on Tues. evenings each week food is distributed to 75-100 needy persons. Volunteers are needed to help pick up and store food from Giant Food and other area supermarkets for about two hours on Mon. and Tues. mornings using the Calvary Food Bank truck. Davidsonville Wildlife Sanctuary

This nonprofit organization helps injured and orphaned animals by treating them, raising and caring for them, and releasing them back into the wild. If release is not an option they are provided permanent homes at the sanctuary or elsewhere. Volunteers, age 18 and up, who can commit to at least one morning per week are needed for ongoing animal care including feeding, watering, cleaning for a wide variety animals. Hammond-Harwood House

Volunteer docents, 18 and older, are needed to serve as weekend tour guides; those able to work to or more weekend days per month (Noon – 5pm) are preferred. Training is provided. Volunteers are also needed for publicity, children’s events, research and more. There are opportunities for volunteers to work at home on projects such as woodworking or sewing upholstered slip covers for pillows that are on display in the collection and more.   • Hammond-Harwood House also offers unpaid internships during the spring and fall semesters as well as in the summer.  Students seeking unpaid internships must be currently enrolled in school and working towards a degree.  The program makes every effort to offer experience in all aspects of small museum management.  Students interested in applying may contact the curator at [email protected] or 410-263-4683 x12.

Hope House

Hope House is seeking to expand and strengthen our Board of Directors. Founded in 1983, Hope House Treatment Center offers short-term residential and outpatient programs for adults who are battling the disease of addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. Hope House Treatment Center has a board of directors of 10-12, which meets monthly or bi-monthly. Our current objective is to solidify the future of the organization through strategic growth and fund development. Qualifications: We are especially seeking applicants who understand and support our mission and who have experience with fund development and board development. Junior League of Annapolis

This organization reaches out to women of all races, religions, and national origins who share an interest in and commitment to volunteerism and community service. Volunteers needed to work on projects supporting children and families, including the Teen Empowerment and Mentoring Program (TEAM) in conjunction with the Anne Arundel Medical Center’s Women’s and Children’s Division, the September Back to School Book Bag project, to assist with fundraising, serve on Board of Directors and support other programs and services.   • Starts 4:00 pm Dec. 3 to Dec. 24, 2010, Gift Wrapping: Volunteers are needed to staff gift wrapping shifts at the “Wrap It Up!” store located in the atrium near Macy’s at Westfield Annapolis Mall. Moveable Feast

This nonprofit provides home delivered meals for clients who are homebound with HIV/AIDS. Volunteers, as young as 16 (15 & under w/adult) are needed to deliver meals Monday through Friday between 9 am and 3 pm and 5 pm–8 pm. Kitchen help, a baker, and office help are also needed. Maryland Therapeutic Riding

Located in Crownsville, MTR is a Premier Accredited Therapeutic Riding Center that offers therapeutic horseback riding lessons for children and adults with special needs. Volunteers, ages 14 and up, assist with riding lessons and are needed throughout the week to assist with horse care, barn and facility maintenance. Volunteers are also needed to assist with special events, serve on committees including fund raising, and general office duties.  All volunteers are required to attend a training session prior to beginning their volunteer service.  If you would like to attend an upcoming training session (held monthly), please call Volunteer Coordinator Katie Spohn at 410-923-1187. OHLA (Organization of Hispanics/Latin Americans of Anne Arundel County)

OHLA provides support, education and relief services to immigrant Hispanic-American families. Volunteers serve as Outreach Coordinators bridging existing gaps in areas such as health, jobs and other services needed by the community.  Bi-lingual volunteers staff the Annapolis office located in the Community Resource Center at 80 West St., and assist Hispanic constituents with many issues ranging from immigration to interpreter services, training provided.  Volunteers must be age 18 and up and some computer skills are preferred but not necessary.

A volunteer bilingual licensed clinical social worker, psychologist, or psychiatrist is needed to help initiate a Mental Help Support Group for Hispanic women. Leading and counseling the group would involve an hour once every week or two.  Contact Joyce Masterson at 410-266-6145 or [email protected].

Rude Ranch Animal Rescue

This nonprofit located in Harwood is in search of volunteers who have a love for cats and kittens and would enjoy helping to care for abandoned, sick and wild cats until they find new homes. Volunteers are needed as: Animal Visitors, stop and play with the cats; Feral Cat Socializers, help teach “wild” cats that they no longer need to fear people; Animal Caretakers, at least 2 hours per week to clean and care for cats; Adoption Counselors, help screen potential adopters; Carpenters, help design and build new habitats for special needs cats. They accept group and youth volunteers (minimum age 16) and family volunteers (as long as parent is present). They also need donated canned cat food. Salvation Army

Volunteers at Salvation Army location at 511 S. Crain Hwy are needed to serve lunch to the homeless on Wed. and Fri. between 11:30 am – 1:30 pm. Volunteers can also assist with homework at the Boys & Girls Club between 3–5 pm, Monday through Thursday, after background checks.  They can also help with arts & crafts and sports from 3-8 pm Monday through Friday.  Nonperishable food items and donations of toiletries, clean clothing, large baby diapers, wipes, etc. are always needed.
