Annapolis Secures $225K Grant For Housing

Mayor Joshua J. Cohen is offering his thanks to Gov. Martin O’Malley after the state Department of Housing and Community Development awarded $225,000 in Community Legacy grant funding for a new affordable housing project on Clay Street.

The Annapolis project received the greatest share of the $4.25 million in community legacy funding announced on Monday by Housing and Community Development Secretary Raymond A. Skinner. In all, 38 municipal governments and community organizations from across Maryland were awarded funding for revitalization projects.

The funding will be used to finance part of the demolition of 123 units at College Creek Terrace and Obery Court. That construction is part of a redevelopment effort to inject new vitality along Clay Street. Once the redevelopment is completed, 164 units of severely deteriorated vacant housing units will be eliminated. In their place will be a neighborhood of 174 units of new rental units that will be managed by Pennrose Cos.

Community Legacy offers municipal governments and developers funding for revitalization projects to encourage homeownership, spur commercial renewal, job development and build on the governor’s Smart Green & Growing initiative.

“I am excited that this funding puts us a step closer toward completing this vital housing project in the heart of Annapolis,” Mayor Cohen said. “I thank Gov. O’Malley and the Department of Housing and Community Development for their support of our cause to provide affordable housing for all Annapolitans.”
