Are You A Kinship Caregiver?

Are you caring for a niece, nephew, or grandchild in your home in Anne Arundel County? Do you have questions and don’t know where to turn? You are not alone. You are among the people in the growing trend of caregivers across the country known as Kinship Care.

Kinship Care is commonly defined as the full-time care, nurturing, and protection of children by relatives or other adults who have a family relationship to the child. It is a growing phenomenon in this country, with about 1 in 10 children living with their grandparents.

A Kinship Caregiver Support Group will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at the Blue Heron Room at Quiet Waters Park, 600 Quiet Waters Park Road off Hillsmere Drive in Annapolis. Please indicate you are attending a DSS Kinship Caregiver Support Group for free park admittance. Another support group will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Nov. 9, in the craft room at the Pascal Senior Activity Center, 125 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie.

The Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services has established a Kinship Navigator program to assist family members on a short-term basis to access information and obtain a resource manual. The program is a joint effort of the DSS, the Department of Aging and Disabilities, the Department of Recreation and Parks, and the Board of Education.
