Ombudsman Program Seeks Volunteers

The Ombudsman Program at the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities is seeking volunteers to assist in protecting the rights and promoting the well-being of residents of long-term care facilities.

The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program also helps those residents to maintain control over their own lives and personal dignity. Long-term care facilities include nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. The Ombudsman Program is authorized by the Older Americans Act and Maryland law.

Responsibilities include receiving and resolving complaints made by or for such residents. The program seeks to educate consumers and long-term care providers about residents’ rights and good care practices. The program also provides information to the public about nursing homes and other long-term care facilities and services.

Volunteers will complete five training sessions in the classroom over a two-week period and then participate in field work. After completing their training, volunteers assist the Ombudsman program on the average of two to three hours per week. Training will be offered in early October.

Anyone interested in volunteering should call Stevanne Ellis at 410-222-4464, Ext. 3111 by Sept. 22.
