Mayor Seeks Volunteers For City Dock Committee

Mayor Joshua J. Cohen announces that the City of Annapolis is forming a citizens committee to advise the City on redeveloping City Dock.  This is the administration’s first step in a yearlong planning effort to re-envision and renew Annapolis’ signature public space.

The City Dock Advisory Committee will serve as the foundation for public involvement throughout this visioning and planning effort. The objectives of the CDAC will include:

1.     Establish the guiding principles for the use and redevelopment of the City Dock area
2.     Develop and define a design plan for City Dock based on those principles
3.    Encourage and coordinate public participation via a series of public events throughout the process. The CDAC will help to determine the exact nature and timing of those public events.

Mayor Cohen invites area residents and businesspersons who are interested in serving on the CDAC to apply to the Department of Planning and Zoning by Friday, Oct. 8. Applicants should submit a letter of interest to the department (145 Gorman St., 3rd floor, Annapolis, Md., 21401 or via e-mail to [email protected]).  Selections will be made in part to ensure representation from a broad variety of stakeholder interests.

Planning and Zoning, which will oversee the City Dock redevelopment process, will hold a two-day event in November to kick off public engagement. A panel from the Urban Land Institute, a national authority on land use and economic revitalization, has been invited to offer a neutral assessment of the City Dock area that will serve as a catalyst for the public dialogue.

The CDAC is expected to establish the guiding principles for the public purpose and design by early 2011, setting the stage for design planning. The department’s goal is to present a City Dock plan to City Council by fall 2011, at which time the CDAC’s work will conclude.

“We have a unique opportunity to breathe new life into City Dock,” Mayor Cohen said.  “Public participation is essential to this process because a vibrant City Dock needs to reflect our collective wisdom as Annapolitans.”
