Well Freddie, I never said the coach didn’t screw up, The reason and ONLY REASON he was suspended was b/c he failed to fill out a piece of paper!

And here’s another fact: the parents of the injured player don’t blame the coach. I have my sources.

I think what probably happened the kid hurt his back, told the coach, coach told him to sit down and over the next day or 2 things got worse. The parents take him to doctor and the doctor gives them the bad news,they call the school, they don’t know what parents are talking about and a whole chain of events ensue. Hope the young man is going to be ok.

Oh Bob, why are you blaming the victim for the coaches mistake ? This coach clearly disregarded protocol and if this minor player has a history of back injuries the coach is doubly negligent. There is nothing to gained in highschool by playing hurt or ‘toughing it out”. But we will all have to wait to see how this unfolds before we can see the degree to which this bad coach hurt the child and his own reputation. I am all for scarificing one gung-ho coach to make an example of him to show other coachesd what happens when you ignore an injured player.

Also, this kid had a back injury last year. For some reason, his doctor cleared him to play football. Why? I don’t know. But I’d love to know what doctor that is so I don’t make the mistake in seeing that same doctor.

The player was not “told” to remain at practice. When he received treatment, I’m not sure. But if you saw someone walking around not complaining of pain and not cowering over in pain would you think he was hurt? Honestly? And like I said earlier, he was not suspened over the injury. He was suspended due to the accident report he failed to fill out and submit to the school. And the policy is even more screwy in that the report clearly states at the top of the paper that it is to be filled out by the principal. Yes, it doesn’t make sense. But the coach was not suspended due to any negligence on the field. Period.

After the injury, during practice, did the player receive medical treatment? Or was he told to remain at practice?

Laura. At the high school level, I might suggest that it is the responsibility of the Coach to determine the need for medical attention. Perhaps the coaches in the county are not trained well enough to know the difference between a serious injury and one that is not so serious. ANY back or head injury must be treated as serious and must seek medical attention. This is one of the first things they teach you in EMT or Paramedic class. It is better to be safe than sorry. If the school district’s policy is to allow a student to self diagnose an injury, that policy needs to be changed and if the coach followed the established rules, he shoudl return to his job.

he deffinently didnt tell the kid to keep playing. the kid was escorted from the field. the boy claimed he didnt need medical attention, i know this because i am friends with many of them players on the foot ball team. so before you call him careless you need to get your facts straight and know what you are talking about. yeah erxleben should have filed paperwork, and he should pay the consequence for failing to do so, but a law suit? thats rediculous. all people want to do these days are sue sue sue. grow up. i agree with bob, he loves his team very much. all of the team members love and support him. if he did any wrong doing intentionally they WOULD NOT WANT HIM BACK!!!!!!
