Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse (PHOTOS)

There are only two more days to get up close and personal with the iconic Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse–July 31st and August 15th. Make your reservation now. It is an incredible one of a kind experience!

We had the opportunity to visit the lighthouse on Sunday, July 11th and came away with some beautiful photos (below) and a whole lot of knowledge of what it was like to man this essential marker back in the day.  We learned how the (lighthouse) keepers worked and lived, how they survived, and the rigors they faced while doing this essential job.

The lighthouse is currently being restored and is anticipated to be done by the end of 2011 (although one of the docents told me that 2012 might be a better guess) complete with period furniture.

Our trip began at the Annapolis Maritime Museum on Second Street in Eastport with an audio visual history followed by a safety lesson. From there, 18 of us boarded a Chesapeake Lights boat, piloted by Capt. Mike Richards and transported back in time to 1875!

The Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is the only operational screw pile lighthouse still used as a navigation aid in the country. This tour, limited to 18 people, is truly a unique experience.  To make a reservation, call 410-295-0104 or visit www.amaritime.org.
