For A Day, We Feel For The Yankees

They are the team you love to hate. The Evil Empire. No self respecting Orioles fan could outwardly show any appreciation to the New York Yankees.  Except for today.

Today, professional sports lost a good one. George Steinbrenner passed away this morning at the age of 80, just after celebrating his birthday on July 4th. Steinbrenner owned the Yankees for almost 40 years and was no stranger to controversy or confrontation.

Love him or hate him, he developed a team which he purchased for $8.5 million in 1973 into the most respected, most winning organization in baseball worldwide. Playing or watching a game in Yankee Stadium (old or new) always brought a special undefined feeling to fans and players alike.

Steinbrenner had been in failing health over the past few years and the operation of the team had been turned over to his sons.

Earlier this week, the voice of Yankee baseball was silenced when Bob Sheppard, the Yankee Stadium announcer from 1951-2007 passed away at age 99.

Today, the Yankees have our respect and our thoughts and prayers as they deal with the loss of “The Voice” and “The Boss”.
