Off Duty State Trooper, Shot, Killed.  Police are searching for a man they said shot and killed an off-duty Maryland state trooper who was working security at a Prince George’s County restaurant.Trooper Wesley Brown, 24, escorted a disorderly customer from an Applebee’s on Thursday evening, and when he left the restaurant at about 12:40 a.m. Friday, State Police Superintendent Col. Terrence Sheridan said that customer shot him.Brown, who was wearing a jacket that clearly identified him as a police officer, was talking on the phone in the parking lot of the restaurant and was shot without warning, Sheridan said.

Pedestrian In Wheelchair Killed In Crash.  Annapolis police are investigating a car crash in which a pedestrian was killed Thursday afternoon.Officers were called to the 900 block of West Street at about 1 p.m., where they found a woman in a wheelchair who had been hit by a car.The pedestrian, identified as Marla Marie McFarland, 56, was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, police said.Authorities said charges are pending against the driver, who has not been identified.There is no word yet on how the crash happened.

Gulf Oil Spill Affects East Coast Beach Businesses. Some East Coast beach businesses said they’re getting a boost from tourists who planned to visit beaches on the Gulf of Mexico but have changed plans because of the oil spill.Lucy Mitchell of Shoreline Properties in Maryland’s Ocean City said she’s getting calls from “people that would usually go south but want to come here.”She said people are having second thoughts about the gulf.

Since Maryland drivers will no longer be able to use hand-held cell phones while behind the wheel after Oct. 1, some are enlisting the help of a digital personal assistant to still get things done in the car.The website www.fdi-voice.com offers a virtual assistant named Kylee — a web-based technology that can make your drive a little easier and safer.Once you become a member, the website will walk you through the process of getting connected. Then you can text, make phone calls, dial numbers and check e-mails through voice command so you never have to touch your phone.
