BGE Substation Burns In Gambrills

UPDATE 4:08PM 6/22/2010: Third alarm has been sounded and shift commander is calling for available foam units from many jurisdictions.

According to our partner WBAL-TV, the BGE substation near Route 3 and Waugh Chapel Road experienced a two alarm fire this morning.  The fire reportedly started in an oil filled transformer. County fire crews requested a crash truck from BWI Airport to assist.

According to Linda Foy, spokesperson for BGE, the substation was not in service at the time of the fire and electricity delivery should not be impacted.

This particular substation is reported to be a major link in the energy grid for the Mid-Atlantic and was a concern in the aftermath of 9-11.
