North County High Graduate Drowns In Oregon

Walter Dines, 18, of Anne Arundel County drowned yesterday after jumping into a swimming hole in Oregon while visiting his father. The recently graduated North County High School student did not know how to swim.

Our media partner, WBAL-TV reports that Dines’ friend, Alex Silva, dared Dines to jump into the Oregon River.  “I told him to jump in, don’t be afraid. And he said, ‘All right, you jump in first.’ I said, ‘All right,’ and I jumped in and swam across, and I go up to the high rock to jump off, and by then, I guess he went under with the undertow.”

Dines, an honors student, track athlete, and basketball athlete had several scholarship offers .
