It was also announced today that no candidate stepped to the plate to challenge him, so he is essentially assured another 4 year term

Isn't it ironic that the Attorney General, Doug Gansler, in his official biography on the Maryland Attorney General Web site, states among his many accolades as a prosecutor, that, "As a federal prosecutor, Mr. Gansler’s most notable case was the successful prosecution of a drunk-driving diplomat who killed a 16-year-old Maryland girl near Dupont Circle, in Washington, D.C." Yet this same man refuses to acknowledge, never mind prosecute, the third DUI offense of his trusted Civil Rights Division Director, whom he appointed. If he does nothing, as it appears to be the case, they both should be removed from office.

I don't believe that people should look the other way, even the first time. It has been estimated that by the time a drunk driver is arrested the first time, he or she has likely driven drunk between 200 and 2000 times. This was the estimate used by the MVA. MADD uses an average of 87 times. Either way, that's a lot of drunk driving before someone is finally arrested. The reason not to look the other way is not solely to punish, although some punishment is certainly in order, but also to help the offender. Obviously these offenders have a problem if they are incapable of not drinking when they know they will have to drive, or at least stopping at one drink and then waiting to leave. Combine the punishment with a requirement for treatment, and if it doesn't work, ensure they won't get behind the wheel of a car again. The life of the offender and all he or she will come in contact with are too precious to risk.
