From the Anne Arundel County Police report:

On April 22, 2010, at approximately 10:19 p.m., an officer from the Eastern District was on routine patrol in the area of Elvaton Road and Starwood Drive in Glen Burnie when he observed a male subject jumping up and down on the roof of a parked Pontiac Minivan.

Consequently, the officer pulled his patrol vehicle behind the van and the subject jumped down and began charging towards the officer in an aggressive manner. The officer feared he was going to be assaulted and deployed his departmentally issued Taser and struck the suspect, who removed the prongs and continued toward the officer. At that time, a 19-year-old female acquaintance exited the vehicle and the male subject suddenly began assaulting her. The officer then deployed his Taser a second time and the suspect again removed the prongs and continued assaulting the female victim.

At one point, the suspect picked up an unknown object off of the road, began waving it over his head and charged the officer. The officer retreated and ordered the suspect to stop approaching, but he ignored those commands. Fearing that he was in imminent danger of serious injury, the officer discharged his service weapon multiple times and struck the suspect at least once. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Shock Trauma with non-life threatening injuries. The officer was not injured during the incident and the female victim did not require medical attention. The officer involved in this incident is a three-year veteran of the department assigned to the Eastern District and his name is not being released at this time.

The suspect, Richard Anthony Malczewski, Jr., 20, of 389 Riverside Drive in Pasadena, will immediately be charged with 2nd Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting Arrest, Failure to Obey a Reasonable Lawful Order, Disturbing the Peace and Disorderly Conduct when he is released from the hospital. The suspect will remain under 24-hour guard until his release.

This incident is being investigated by the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Homicide Unit. The results of the investigation will be forwarded to the State’s Attorney’s Office for review. The officer involved has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the review of the incident.

While preparing this post, we thought the photo may have been mixed up with a recent photos supplied by the police of Michael May who was wanted (and ultimately captured) in connection with a home invasion and stabbing in Crownsville. While the suspects look similar, the real similarity is the tattoos on the right side of their neck.
