Glen Burnie Teacher Named Teacher Of The Year

Erin Sullivan Wins Teacher Of The Year

From the Anne Arundel County Public Schools:

Erin Sullivan, an ESOL teacher at Glen Burnie High School, tonight was named as the 2009-10 Anne Arundel County Public Schools Teacher of the Year. The surprise announcement culminated an evening of celebration at the 24th annual Excellence in Education Awards, presented by AACPS and the Annapolis & Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Comcast and the Anne Arundel Community College Foundation.

Two local businesses were also honored as Business Partners of the Year for their outstanding contributions to county schools. Reilly Benefits was selected as the small business (less than 50 employees) winner for its work on a variety of initiatives with Southern High School. In the large business (more than 50 employees) category, Northrop Grumman won for the second consecutive year, this time for its partnership with Meade High School’s Homeland Security signature program.

Sullivan will now represent county public school teachers as the school system’s nominee for Maryland Teacher of the Year.

“I am really excited about what this award means for my students,” Sullivan said. “They get to see that the work of their teachers is important to others. I am inspired by their struggles and triumphs, so I will use this as an opportunity to bring ESOL education into the forefront.”

Fifty-four educators and 14 business partnerships were recognized during the event, which was attended by more than 600 people. Other finalists for this year’s public school Teacher of the Year honor were: Dana P. Manojlović, a third-grade teacher at Central Elementary School; Laura Pinto, a social studies teacher at Bates Middle School; Sandra Nee-Jackson, a child development teacher at Old Mill High School; and Renee Michelle Stout, an AVID teacher at North County High School.

Sullivan has been at Glen Burnie High School for five years, and has elevated student achievement throughout that time. Eleven of her students graduated last year, and nine were the first high school graduates in their families.

“Erin is someone who clearly moves beyond the four walls of the classroom,” said Nantucket Elementary School Principal Dr. Diana Strohecker, one of eight judges for the competition. “She gives every ounce to every child who comes in and is at a disadvantage of not being able to have a good command of the English language. This is more than a job or even a passion for Erin. It has settled in her soul.”
