Bascaom Silences Senators

The Bowie Baysox continued their strong start to the season with a 5-2 win over the Harrisburg Senators, their third consecutive victory.  The win moves Bowie to 4-1 on the season and keeps them neck-and-neck with Altoona and Akron for the early divisional lead.

Baysox starter Tim Bascom pitched six shutout innings to get the win and retired 14 of the first 16 batters he faced as the Baysox completed their first cycle of the starting rotation.

“I felt pretty good tonight,” Bascom said.  “My off-speed wasn’t where I wanted it to be, but I was locating my fastball well tonight and just got ahead of hitters and had the utmost confidence in the fielders behind me so I just let them make some plays for me.”

The starting pitching has been a highlight for the Baysox so far this year; Bascom continued the 12-inning shutout streak among starters, which right-hander Ryohei Tanaka started in Sunday’s win.  Through five games, Bowie’s starting rotation has only given up four runs.

“We’ve been pretty solid all the way through,” said Pitching Coach Kennie Steenstra.  “We’ve got a couple of guys that we would’ve liked to have gotten stretched out a little bit more inning-wise, but for the most part all of them have been pretty solid and kept us in the game and given us a chance to win.”

“[Bascom] pitched very well,” Steenstra continued.  “He went after guys, threw lots of strikes, kept the ball down for the most part, got some more ground balls than we had yesterday and did a nice job of mixing his pitches and using that low strike zone to his benefit.”

Baserunning was a key component to the Baysox offense in the win.  In the third inning, Ryan Adams was able to advance from first to second on a wild pitch and, after reaching on a single that sent Adams to third, shortstop Pedro Florimon stole second base so that both runners could score off of Miguel Abreu’s line drive single later in the inning.  Abreu also got in on the action, stealing second to put him in position to score off of third baseman Paco Figueroa’s single to put the Baysox up 3-0.

The most remarkable offensive play of the night came from a mix of speed and awareness by center fielder Danny Figueroa in the fourth inning.  He singled to center field, driving in left fielder Tyler Henson and advanced Figueroa to second on the throw home.  Harrisburg catcher Jhonatan Solano tried to throw Figueroa out at second, but the throw sailed into center field.  Figueroa was able to score before the Senators could track the ball down.

“Being a good base runner, you’ve got to run with your head up and see what’s happening around you and that’s what [Figueroa] has done,” said Field Coach Moe Hill.  “You’ve got to give him credit for doing that, scoring from second on that ball that got by the second baseman, he just ran with his head up and he scored easily.”

The Baysox will look to continue their hot streak Tuesday night as the Baby Beltway Series against Harrisburg rolls on as fans of either of the local big league teams will get a chance to see their future stars in action.  The Senators feature Nationals prospects first baseman Chris Marrero and top ten 2009 draft picks pitchers Drew Storen and Stephen Strasburg.  As with all Tuesday games this year, it will also be a Belly Buster Bargain Night.  Any fan who purchases a regularly priced lower reserved seat ticket ($14) receives a voucher for a free foot long hot dog, bag of peanuts and small popcorn.
