The Bowie Baysox saw their eight-game winning streak come to end with a 4-0 loss to the Akron Aeros Sunday afternoon. Baysox starter Zach Britton allowed all four of the Aeros run and is the Baysox first starter to be charged with a loss this season. With the loss, the Baysox are 9-2 and lead Altoona in the Western Division by 1.5 games.
Britton retired the first three batters he faced before giving up a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Aeros designated hitter Matt McBride led off the inning with an infield single back to Britton and left fielder Jeff Goedert followed with a two-run home run to left field. The Aeros put two more runners on base in the inning with back-to-back one-out singles before Britton recorded a groundout and a strikeout to end the frame.
The Baysox looked to answer in the third inning when left fielder Tyler Henson singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a one-out single by shortstop Blake Davis. With two on and one out, Aeros starter Ryan Edell struck out third baseman Paco Figueroa swinging before center fielder Miguel Abreu grounded out to end the inning.
Goedert and the Aeros got to Britton again in the bottom of the third inning. Lonnie Chisenhall lined a single to center to lead off the inning and Indians first baseman Russell Branyan followed with another single to center. Both runners advanced on a groundout before Goedert drove them in with a single to right field. The four-RBI game gave Goedert eight RBIs on the season.
Britton lasted through six innings in the game and only allowed one more runner to reach second base in the contest. He allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out six. He was relieved by 2009 All-Star Ryan Ouelllette and the hard-throwing right-hander kept the Aeros off the board through his two innings.
Bowie tried to get back into the game in the top of the sixth inning. Already trailing 4-0, Figueroa led off with a single to right field and moved to third on a one-out single by first baseman Robbie Widlansky. The Baysox were unable to push a run across when third baseman Brandon Waring popped out and right fielder Joel Guzman grounded out to end the inning.
The Baysox attempted one more rally in the top of the eighth inning. Abreu drew a two-out walk and Widlansky was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for Waring. The Aeros turned to right-handed closer Neil Wagner to face the slugger, and Waring grounded out to the shortstop. Wagner retired the first three batters he faced before allowing a two-out walk to Henson in the top of the ninth. With Henson on first, second baseman Ryan Adams flew out to center field to end the game.
The Baysox will continue the seven-game road trip with a three-game set in Erie beginning Monday night at 6:35 p.m. The team returns home on to face the Aeros again on Thursday, April 22, and will have fireworks presented by Educational Systems Federal Credit Union after the games on Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24.
