Eye On Annapolis is thrilled to be able to bring the insight and perspective of Taylor Michie to our sailing enthusiasts.  For those who are unaware of Taylor, you need to become aware; as this sailor is quickly making a name for himself across the globe.  Taylor has written his first novella Racing Winds and his second is due for publication this year. Not a bad start for 14 years old!

From the bio page on his website Racing Winds:

Taylor Michie became taken with the Volvo Ocean Race after moving to Annapolis, Maryland from Charlotte, North Carolina. After witnessing the Volvo Ocean Race in 2005-2006, during the Baltimore-Annapolis stopover, he wanted to write about the race for school–maybe for some extra credit.

That extra credit project has turned into a 109-page historical fiction book, geared at kids in their teens. the book has received support from several organizations, including the Annapolis Visitors Center.

Taylor has one message for kids: follow your dreams. Taylor’s doing just that now, talking to schools and business groups about his newly-published novel, Racing Winds. “Racing Winds is a novel that I became inspired to write. If you think you can do something, then you absolutely can,” says Taylor. “The biggest thing is to always believe in yourself. That’s the most important thing.”

Taylor lives in Annapolis, Maryland, the starting point in his book, Racing Winds. “It was really cool to write about Annapolis, because, hey, I live here!”

Taylor is also the winner of the US Sailing Sailor of the Week Award, which was presented to him in May 2009.

Taylor was invited by the Volvo Ocean Race to travel to Boston, MA to work as a member of the Volvo Ocean Race Media during the 2008-2009 Volvo Ocean Race, and also has a press background with the Play By Play Sports Broadcasting Camps, was guest weather anchor for FOX45 Morning News in Baltimore, and has worked with reporters (TV, print, and radio) and photographers from around the world.

Taylor’s story has been featured in The Capital, Soundings Magazine, and on the Volvo Ocean Race’s official website.

Taylor’s second book, Whitecaps, is due out in August 2010.

He currently lives in Annapolis, MD with his Mom, Dad, and brother.

Taylor’s first perspective will appear Monday. Welcome to Eye On Annapolis!
