Police Arrest Suspect In Community College Assaults

Dori Costa, Suspect in sexual assaults at college.

From a release just issued by the Anne Arundel County Police:

On March 10, 2010, security officers from the Anne Arundel Community College contacted the Anne Arundel County Police Department to report that a 19-year-old female victim relayed to them that she had been approached by an unknown male subject while seated in her vehicle on the parking lot of the campus and sexually assaulted on March 8, 2010.

The victim reported that the suspect was carrying a map book and a cellular telephone and asked for directions. Once she agreed, the suspect reached inside of her car and placed the map book in her lap and proceeded to touch her inappropriately prior to walking away. The Anne Arundel Community College Security Department later reported two additional incidents involving the same suspect and circumstances on March 10, 2010.

Consequently, detectives from the Eastern District immediately began working closely with security personnel from the college and implemented a covert surveillance operation on the campus. Investigators from the Eastern District Detective Unit also sent out a bulletin to all Maryland police agencies that detailed the crimes and provided a physical description of the suspect. On March 12, 2010, an investigator from the University of Maryland Police Department contacted detectives and provided a report and a photograph of a potential suspect based on a similar incident that took place on their campus in College Park.

Based on the suspect information provided by University of Maryland Police, Eastern District Detectives contacted the victims in the most recent assaults. Several of the victims positively identified the suspect as the individual who had sexually assaulted them in the aforementioned incidents. On March 12, 2010, an arrest warrant was issued for the suspect and detectives from the Eastern District responded to Howard County to serve the warrants with the assistance of the Howard County Police Department. Officers were able to locate the suspect and take him into custody. The suspect was charged with 4th Degree Sex Offense and Second Degree Assault and is currently being held at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center on $100,000 bond.

This investigation is very active and detectives are looking into the possibility that this suspect may be linked to other cases. Anyone who has any information related to these cases or who may have been a witness or victim to similar crimes on college campuses is asked to contact Sergeant Jeff Morgan or Detective Charles Howeth of the Eastern District Detective Unit at 410- 222-6145. Due to the ongoing investigation, the suspect’s mug shot can not be released at this time. The photo will be released at the conclusion of the investigation.

Suspect: Dori Joseph Costa, 43, of 12309 Fox Hollow Court, West Friendship, MD
