Hi Kevin--The Mayor made the decision, but it was the directors who executed it. The directors are likely the ones to take the brunt of the layoffs. The employees of the City are not stupid and to a large degree, I am sure they understand that we are in a global recession. Sure they are going to be pissed, but that is life.

I have been laid off and I also have had to lay off people in my career. It is never good for anyone. But the 24/7 protective detail is indeed excessive. City Hall is now locked and you cannot enter without an appointment. I can see that---lock the doors and the Mayor is safe. He already has bullet proof windows I hear (courtesy of Dennis Callahan).

As I mentioned a very close relative was a Cabinet Secretary for the President and was not afforded that type of security. After leaving public service, he was the CEO of a worldwide transportation company--again no protection like that.

Now if there was an imminent threat--absolutely. But there has not been and the City has confirmed that. People are now suggesting that this is a negotiating tactic on behalf of the Police union--put the fear into the Mayor and for sure for all the protection they offered--he woudl never touch their department.

We are a small town ad I stand by my assertion that this is ridiculous!

Hmmm... apparantly the author hasn't been through a large (or even small to mid-size) corporate layoff - that's the way it goes... police on the premises to back up security; additional protection for people who might be targeted by irate and possibly irrational people who want/need to act out on their anger. C'mon... that's all you have to complain about?
