Warning For Drivers

Please Use Caution This Week

Schools will be back in session tomorrow. The roads are still not clear and there will be students walking in travel lanes of many roads. There may be groups of students waiting for their buses.  Please, please use extra caution in the morning between 8:15am and 10:45am (schools are two hours late this week) and 2:00pm and 4:00pm.  We cannot afford to lose a student! Expect them to be in the roads.

The county police will be mobilized to help students make it safely to school. According to a release sent from County Executive John R. Leopold, “Tomorrow will look much like the first day of school, with more emergency personnel and flashing lights to protect our students walking to schools and bus stops. We are asking parents to use their discretion in deciding whether to walk with their children or drive them to school if they consider conditions unsafe.  We will have more police officers, as well as reserve volunteers and district commanders monitoring activities in their districts.”

Schools Superintendent Kevin M. Maxwell reiterated the concern and thanked City and County governments for their assistance in helping to get the students back to school, “This has been, and will continue to be, a team effort between governmental agencies, schools, parents and community residents.  We all need to exercise caution in the coming days as our children return to the classroom.”

In addition to the police presence, schools will have staff in the parking lots to facilitate drop offs. A County police helicopter will be deployed to communicate with ground personnel about any problem areas.
