Right now, money is the critical thing needed to get medical supplies and basic necessities to the people on the island. We have chosen to support Doctors Without Borders for this effort and encourage our readers to do the same. If not through Doctors Without Borders, but through a legitimate organization. Unfortunately scammers come out of the woodwork when disaster strikes. Here is a list (updated frequently) of organizations that have been vetted and are participating in the relief efforts. Mystery Visitor Misses Poe’s Birthday. Is this tradition “nevermore?”A mysterious visitor who for decades has left roses and cognac at the grave of Edgar Allan Poe has failed to show up for the anniversary of the writer’s birthday.The curator of the Poe House and Museum in Baltimore said the graveyard tradition dates back to at least 1949 and has never been interrupted before.Tuesday is the 201st anniversary of Poe’s birth and some three dozen fans waited all night with the curator, Jeff Jerome, for the visitor to arrive at the downtown church cemetery.

Car Chase Startles MLK Parade Crowd. Some folks got more than they bargained for while attending Monday’s 10th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in Baltimore.During the parade, some cars sped down MLK Boulevard, and one of them ended up crashing into a University of Maryland Police car along the parade route.Police are investigating.

8,800 Speed Camera Citations Issued In 6 Weeks.  Maryland highway officials said nearly 8,800 citations were issued during the first six weeks of the state’s speed camera enforcement program. In mid-November, state officials began photographing vehicles exceeding the speed limit by 12 mph or more on three stretches of highway marked as work zones and sending out $40 tickets.Signs that read “Speed Photo Enforced: Work Zone” warn motorists that cameras might be present.

Rabid Calf At Education Center Sparks Alert. Prince George’s County health officials said they are looking for anyone who may have come in contact with a calf at an educational center that has tested positive for rabies.The calf is kept at the Hard Bargain Farm Environmental Center, which runs educational programs for elementary and middle school students.County officials said students and visitors who may have been exposed since Dec. 21 should call 240-508-5774.
