Weekend Bombing Attempt To Impact Travelers

Reacting to the attempted bombing of Northwest Flight by Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the TSA has ratcheted up security measures at airports worldwide.

While the duration and effectiveness of these new procedures remains undecided, travelers should prepare for longer lines and more hassles.

The following procedures are supposed to apply only to incoming international flights:

  • Reamin in your seat for the last hour of flight
  • No inflight mapping
  • No blankets or pillows during the last hour of flight
  • Hands must be visible during last hour of flight
  • No access to carry on baggage last hour of flight
  • No baggage stored under seats
  • Some airlines are restricting carry on baggage to one piece

However, domestically, there will be an increased presence of TSA officers observing people for erratic or suspicious behavior and more explosive sniffing dogs will be deployed.

While the time varies for different airlines, authorities are recommending that you arrive at the airport 2 hours before any domestic flight and 3 hours before any international flight.

As it was after 9/11, the TSA is trying to determine how their systems were faulted and what they can do (if anything) to insure the breach does occur again. Yet still, Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano claimed, “The system worked. Everybody responded quickly, effectively, without panicking and shutting the airline systems or air travel.”
