County Warns Of Roof Collapse

Leopold Warns Of Danger

The following release was just sent out by Anne Ariundel County Executive, John R. Leopold:

Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold today advised all area business and homes with flat roofs of the dangers of collapse due to accumulating snow and possible heavy rains forecasted later in the week.

“Last weekend’s snow storm resulted in about two feet of snow.  Flat roofed buildings are extremely susceptible to collapse from the weight of heavy snow, especially if followed by heavy rain which is tentatively forecasted for later this week, said Mr. Leopold.  “In the interest of public safety I urge citizens to take the necessary steps to remove snow from flat roofs now, before heavy rains come later this week.”

Rain and possible freezing rain is forecasted later in the week.  If snow covered flat roofs are not properly cleared, there is an increased danger of partial or total collapse which could result in possible bodily injury.  In order to avoid a collapse, business owners and property managers should remove any accumulated snow from flat roofs now, and make sure that all roof drains and discharges are clear and free of obstructions.

For more information on proper maintenance of a flat roof and safety precautions to take now, contact the Department of Inspections and Permits, Building Inspections Division at 410-222-7790.
