Snow Emergency Update #8

Snow Daysnowday

Anne Arundel County Schools will be closed tomorrow (Monday, December 21, 2009). Crews have been working since 5am this morning to clear the snow on school property.

But with roads in marginal condition, buses cannot safely maneuver in some neighborhoods and children are at risk due to the unclear streets.

Much to the chagrin of parents, considering that schools are already scheduled to be closed Thursday and Friday of this week, it might make some fiscal sense to close them on Tuesday and Wednesday as well. The cost to run the transportation system, the utilities, and maintenance, and other overhead expenses has to be significant.

The school’s argument is that with only 4 days built into the schedule, you run the risk of extending the school year. But does the Governor declaring a state of emergency carry any clout?
