At last night’s County Council meeting, local businessman Chuck Ferrar was selected to replace the vacancy created by Josh Cohen.

Ferrar is the owner of Bay Ridge Wine & Spirits in Annapolis. Ferrar steps into politics at a crucial time for the County as the council remains deeply divided on zoning for slots near the Arundel Mills Mall. Voters in the state, county, and district approved the referendum in November 2008, and the County Council has been postponing the issue ever since.

Ferrar is a slots proponent, but with the way the Council has been hemming and hawing for the past year, it is anyone’s guess how he will vote. Just recently Ed Middlebrooks recused himself from the vote due to an undisclosed financial conflict of interest, yet changed his mind again and now wants to vote. Mr. Ferrar has stepped into a quagmire and we wish him all the best.

Anne Arundel County Executive, John R. Leopold released a statement this morning welcoming Ferrar to the council.

I have known Chuck Ferrar for many years as a businessman and active member of the Annapolis community. I look forward to working collaboratively with Chuck and the rest of the Council on the important issues that our County faces.  I am pleased that the Council picked a colleague who has experience running a small business because budget expertise is crucial in this difficult year.
