Recent North County High Graduate Dies From H1N1 Complications. Students at North County High School in Glen Burnie are mourning the loss of a recent graduate who, according to his family, died from complications of the swine flu. School officials said that Walter Brooks died Wednesday morning.The teen’s father told 11 News that he got sick last Wednesday. On Tuesday he felt better, but got then much sicker and was taken to the University of Maryland Medical Center. (For more info, see Eye On Annapolis post from last night)
Governor Asks School Superintendents To Scour For Savings. With an ominous budget challenge looming again, Gov. Martin O’Malley is calling on school superintendents to work together in hunting for ways to save money. O’Malley largely has protected education from budget cuts since he took office in 2007, but he put superintendents on notice during a meeting in Annapolis Tuesday that he needs their help to battle a staggering $2 billion shortfall next year in the state’s $13 billion operational budget.
New Slots Deadlines Set; Revenue Questioned. Slots applications in Baltimore city and in Anne Arundel County could face rejection after the Slots Location Commission set a Dec. 17 deadline to get their plans together. Baltimore city slots operators still need to pony up $19.5 million in licensing fees and provide an updated plan on their proposed facility. The Anne Arundel County Council must act on changing zoning.
Baltimore Police Shoot Robbery Suspect. Baltimore police said an officer has shot a robbery suspect.Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said it happened about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 700 block of West Lexington Street.He said an officer who was returning to police headquarters saw a robbery and went to intervene.The victim shouted that the suspect had a gun, and the officer, who saw the suspect holding a gun to the victim’s neck, ordered the suspect to drop the weapon.
