Annapolis citizens looking for a way to make a real difference in their community that can commit to only two hours, one night a week for six weeks now have the opportunity to join the Annapolis Police Department (APD) Citizens Police Academy.

Veteran officers and special guest lectures from the criminal justice and judicial system will share their knowledge on how APD, the community and the Justice System can work together to make Annapolis neighborhoods safe places to live and work.

While participating in this six week training academy, citizens will learn the inner working of the Police Department and the Criminal Justice Department and receive real world, hands-on experience in the inner workings of APD.

Participants will be able to get to know and communicate with police personnel at all levels, including;

The Administrative Services Captain who oversees payroll, officers training, community outreach, Hispanic outreach, CSAFE unit, fleet maintenance, procurement and uniform crime reporting.

The Support Services Captain
who oversees the crime lab, records section, communications and, mobile data unit.

The Operations Captain who oversees our patrol, detectives, flex squads, drug enforcement unit and intelligence unit.

The Chief of Police, who sets policy and gives direction and the Deputy Chief who oversees day to day direction of the Department, drafts policy and procedures and ensures the integrity of the agency and carry out our mission statement.

Participants will also learn about the partnerships that APD has developed to help reduce crime. These efforts have helped the Annapolis Police Department implement a statistically driven, comprehensive crime plan.

For a very small commitment of time, participants in this program will become a valued part of the effort to ensure that Annapolis continues to be a safe and healthy place to live and work.

Partners in the APD Citizens Police Academy include the Housing Authority of the City of Annapolis, the Department of Juvenile Services, the Courts, the Governor’s office of Crime Prevention, the United States Attorney, Community Prosecutors, the Department of General Services, and Parole and Probation. Representatives from many of these groups will be part of the program’s lecture series.

The Annapolis Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy begins at APD Headquarters, 199 Taylor Avenue on September 29th, 2009 at 6:30PM.
