Apparently bear feet are easily mistaken for human feet. Who would have known?

The Maryland State police have said that the state medical examiner determined that remains that initially looked like two human feet were the skinned and declawed paws of a bear.

Earlier today, The Capital reported the possibility and interviewed a taxidermist who concurred that they do look like human feet.

Regardless, what is in the Magothy River that causes a bear to lose his feet? Or alternately, isn’t there a law about disposing of severed bear feet in a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay?
