Claims she never withdrew from race

In yet another bizarre twist on the saga surrounding the election of Annapolis’ next mayor,  Zina Pierre claims a miscommunication led to the erroneous statement that she had withdrawn.

I am running for Mayor of Annapolis and will continue to fight for all residents, many of whom are calling, texting and e-mailing me with extraordinary support. The same support I am getting from the chair of the Annapolis Democratic Central Committee. I will continue to be accountable, transparent and a strong leader. Misinformation led to the confusion of the last two days. We will hold a news conference on Wednesday to address issues in detail.

It has been rumored that Pierre has fired her campaign staff for releasing the withdrawal statement and has hired new staff from outside Anne Arundel County to manage the campaign through the general election in November.

While many prominent local African Americans have encouraged her to withdraw, Pierre appears to be in for the long haul. At this point, it is anyone’s guess how the last 36 hours will affect her campaign or if her voters and supporter have lost some confidence in their candidate. With about 6 weeks to go,  Pierre will need to make up for lost ground.

While the candidate has yet to address her court record, it is assumed that it will be a nagging issue going forward in the campaign which will eventually need to be addressed.

Pierre will address the issues at a press conference on Wednesday.

A copy of her official statement and release is available by clicking here (PDF).
